Women at war

Drawn by Joyce Dennys, these illustrations show how women stepped out of the house to help the war effort during World War 1. There are more on our 1890s-1960s pages, and a number of them have little poems - which, to my modern eye, are decidedly patronising, but hey, that was then and this is now. (What else can I say?)
